Package Diagram - How do I show sub level Use Case
« on: November 27, 2009, 05:24:24 am »
Hi,
I have Package A within it I have a Summary Use Case (UC A1). Within the summary Use Case A1 I have sub level use cases UC A1.1 , UC A1.2 , UC A1.3 etc . When I put the package on the diagram I only see the High Level Summary Use Case as that is what is directly under the package in the browers. Is there any way I can see the hierarchy structure within the package on the diagram similar to whats on the browerr ?

Many thanks

Binny

Binny,

I don't think there is a way to show the sub-elements on a package diagram.

Geert,

thanks for the reply. I just wanted to be sure.. Is see no reason to add an additional package below the high level UC just to depict on the diagram.

I wanted a visual model of 5 main packages. Each has a high level UC and within that some low lovel user UC's. The reason i have the system UC's under the high level UC is to show that its composite and within the high level.

Unfortuantely the package diagram only shows whats directly under the package and not subfolders. I dont want to create a package under a package just for the sake of a diagram.

any ideas would be welcome

Binny,

If you really don't want to create a package then you can still show the structure of your upper/lower level usecases using the "nesting" relation.
This relation basically represents the same concept as the nesting in the project browser.
Unfortunately EA will not automatically manage the nesting relations, so you'll have to add them manually.

Geert,

Can you give me more info on this, i have not heard of that. I am a BA so not technical so my perspective of using EA is at a BA level.

much appreciated

If you open the Class diagram toolbox you'll see that you now have the connector "Nesting" available.
The end that belongs on the side of the whole looks like a circle with a cross in it.
Here http://www.sparxsystems.com/uml_tool_guide/uml_dictionary/nesting.html you find the help page on the subject.

I haven't found this type of connector anywhere in the UML specifications though.

thnx. i will look into it although im not sure it will serve my purpose. quite liked the idea of dragging a package onto the diagram and automatically show UC hierarchy :)

Nesting is only defined for packages, but UML is flexible...

Indeed, thank you.

You would think that the connector notation would have been listed in "7.4 Diagrams", but alas.
