Unable to access MDG technologies and extensions

Hello,

I have an installation of 14.1.1429 on Windows 10 that is misbehaving.  Basically, no matter what selections I make from the Technologies/Manage dialog (below), I cannot then show appropriate tools in the Toolbox. (I'd love to show you a couple of screenshots but I can't work out how...)

This all used to work; I have no idea what changed but currently the only options I can see on the Toolbox's Set Toolbox Visibility dialog are the Basic UML 2 Technology workspace, and 13 UML-oriented  workspaces (Use Case, Communication, Timing, State, Additional, Activity, Objects, Control Nodes, Patterns, Profile, Profile Helpers, Metamodel, Metamodel [sic])

I have uninstalled and reinstalled several time, to no avail.  I have installed v15 instead, but again no technologies are available.

I'll point out that the uninstallation process doesn't clean up at all well; after uninstall/reinstall a whole bunch of pre-configured settings from the previous installation are magically restored (e.g. window configuration of my workspaces).presumably from the HKCU registry hive.

Has anyone else ever seen something a bit like this, and what was the fix?

PS: This looks similar to "Trying to set required MDG Techs completely screws up MDG management", but the workaround there didn't work for me.

You probably have the wrong perspective set.

Hi Geert,

I made some random (is what it felt like to me...) changes in a Perspectives dialog that I opened by typing 'Perspective' in the Find command... box, and as if by magic the tools I needed became available.  So it's good that I have got my MDG back, but it is totally unclear to me what I actually did!
 
Joking aside, how do you know which perspective is active, and which functions are associated with it?  I can't see anything in the user interface that makes it obvious.

I'm not sure. I not really using the perpectives yet.

The Perspective control is in the top right corner (and also various other dialogs where it might be useful), and the current Perspective is shown on the Status Bar in the bottom right corner. It is recommended that you keep all your technologies enabled and switch between perspectives.

Thank you for that. I'm still not sure why tweaking the Perspective made all my tools magically appear.

I had set the set of tools I wanted to use selected via the Specialize/Technologies/Manage/MDG Technologies dialog; my issue was that none of the selected options appeared in the Toolbox menu, until I selected Archimate from the the Enterprise Architecture menu grouping of the Portals window.  My choosing Archimate wasn't a guided decision - it was a guess.

You nickname fits well with EA :-) And your approach of guessing too... Somehow you can get the hang of it. But EA is very unique in its way. Not all bad. It has lots of goodies. In Germany we have a saying "built with your hands and teared down with your butt". Sparxians are perfect in that.
