MACBOK/Catalina EA install problem... MSI download file
« on: May 05, 2020, 07:16:01 am »
I recently migrated from a Windows PC to a MACBOOK Pro and have (re)downloaded EA, however, it is a Microsoft ( .MSI ) extension which the MAC can't open. How do I get around this problem? I cant find any helpp within the forum or support FAQS.
Thanks in advance, Steph

You start by installing Wine (or Crossover)

I don't know how Catalina handles 32 bit windows applications under Wine. I've heard it's handled in some way. I haven't tried it.

I'm using Parallels ever since. I once got EA under wine to work (pre Catalina). It worked. Somehow. But a bit creepy. Parallels keeps the Jinn in an extra bottle. I also tried other VM solutions (also pre Catalina; no recommendations) and my old machine could not cope with Docker. I might give that a try later again.

I also have Sparx EA running under Parallels on Catalina.
(Also using PostgreSQL as the backend database.)
No problems or issues at all - Highly recommend giving Parallels a try.

Thanks for all the info.

I elected to purchase CrossOver, the install went well, except I unknowingly used the existing Enterprise Architect 15.x loader, it worked, but installed a trial copy of EA (I own a Professional. copy of 15.1). It successfully opened a Windows EAPx file I previously created (I used to have a Windows system).

I sent Sparx support an email asking how to re-target the EA used to mine and not a trial copy,. They sent instructions to uninstall, then re-install EA. I did that and when I re-opened EA, it was using my copy, but, ... JET4 wasn't enabled, I enabled it, restarted EA, and it blew-up with an error message: "Fatal Error Initializing DAO Library...".

I send SPARX support an email a few days ago, and haven't heard back from them. So, today, I removed all traces of CrossOver, and searched for any traces of SPARX files, or Crossover. I then re-downloaded CrossOver, used the Undefined Enterprise Archietcture 15.1 box, gave it my downloaded SPARX MSI file and ran it... the result failed (with another "Fatal Error Initializing DAO Library..." error message).

This afternoon I sent SPARX Support yet another email, I'm getting really frustrated, can anyone out there help me?

Thanks in advance,

Stephan Amsbary

Have you explicitly installed JET 4 support into your crossover bottle?

Hi Eve, I attempted to do so in one of my tries, Allan sent me a link regarding how to accomplish it, though the result failed. none of the commands were recognized, starting with "Using Winetrisks to install runtime libraries' step three's adding winetricks' runtime libraries. I'm not sure what I missed. Here's the link he provided: https://www.sparxsystems.com/enterprise_architect_user_guide/15.1/product_information/enterprise_architect_macos.html

Well, that would be the problem. In order to open .eapx files you will need JET 4 installed.

Those instructions will have EA running under Wine, related but not the same as installing it under Crossover.

It's been years since I used Crossover, but I think there should be an option under install software to install a windows component. Worst case, download load the JET 4 installer and install it into the same bottle that you installed Enterprise Architect.

Otherwise, where did things go wrong following the instructions we provide? What messages were shown?

Good day Eve,

Thank you for the rapid reply!

When I first tried installing EA, I used the supported Enterprise Architect 125 installer, it worked fine (including JET4 support), and I was able to open the test EAPx file.. the problem was it used a trial license, it didn't allow me to use my purchased (licensed) copy, nor did it had an option for my MSI.

Allan, directed me to the SPARX support note to install my purchased copy using Undefined Enterprise Architect v15.1, this is when the problems started with JET4.

Here is a capture of my emails with Allan, with the error messages,... OK, seems the image won't insert into this message

That all said, I'll work through the links you suggested, and see if it works. Again thanks you for the rapid reply today !@

Hi Allan,

I typed/spoke to soon,

I followed the instructions, and since I’m using Crossover the Wine is not in the Applications folder, it is in CrossOver… see screen shot below, Double clicking the Wine Config in CrossOver didn’t open up a Terminal, it opened Wine’s configuration.  I attempted to add JET40 but it isn’t an .EXE file.

How do I add it per the instructions (also in the screen snip below)?...

Help, Steph

Hi again Eve,

I ran the two scripts/downloads successfully, however, I received the same error message: Fatal Error Initializing DAO Library: try reinstalling EA.

Good News,

It worked, I previously installed JET4 in a compatible bottle, and didn't see that EA v15.1 was a bottle listed at the bottom of incompatible bottles. So I re-ran the script and chose the "incompatible" bottle did work !

BTW, CrossOver's install a new application did the work.

Thanks again !

Cheers, stay safe, and try to have some fun, Stephan Amsbary
