Strange behavior on 64-bit XP
« on: March 04, 2010, 05:46:16 pm »
Hi all!

Yesterday I installed v. 7.5.850 (Build: 850) Unicode on my 64-bit XP machine. I immediately noticed a strange behavior while trying to work in "diagram mode". I'm not able to create any elements by drag-and drop either from the projecy browser or the toolbox. The only way I'm able to create new elements is by copying an element and then select Paste->Paste Element->As New.

UPDATE: I even tried to create new elements in list-view but the same problem occurs.

This severly limits the use of the tool. Any suggestions on what might be wrong?

Thanks!
/Peter

Peter,

What happens if you drag an element on a diagram?
Does it look like its going to put something there, or is there something wrong with the mouse-handling?

IIRC there was something about the jet 4.0 driver and 64 bit machines as well.

Hi Geert!

Yes, the tool gives a visual indication that it is about to "put something" in the diagram area. However, when I release the mous-button nothing happens and nothing is created.

I installed a previous version (unfortunately I don't remember the version number) in December last year, and that version worked without a glitch. It was the same machine with the same OS.

Peter,

Then I think it might be a database/driver issue.
There is an option somewhere to indicate wich jet driver to use.
You also might want to search the forum (use search button on top left) for "jet" or "jet 4"

Hi Geert!

Sigh, this is really starting to severly impact my possibilities to use EA! i decided to skip the Access/Jet route completely and created an SS-database (I've done this earlier and it worked great together with EA) - ran the script, upsized my project and, finally, opened the project from the server *but* the problems persists! I'm simply not able to create *any* new elements by dragging from the toolbox, right-click->New. The only way I'm able to create new elements is by copying an existing element and then Paste Elements->As New.

I'd gladly degrade to a previous version just in order to make things work, but unfortunately I don't remember which version I used in december 2009. Any suggestions?

The bottom line here is that there seems to be a serious problem getting EA work on 64-bit XP.

Cheers,
/Peter

Peter,

First I would send a bug report to Sparx Support for this issue. They will probably be able to solve this for you within a few days. Use the link on the bottom of the page to send the bug report/support request.

Second, we've used 7.5.844 (april 2009) and 7.5.847(august 2009) here before upgrading to 7.5.850

Both versions worked pretty good. (I think I still have those distributions here somewhere if needed)

Peter,

Just thought of something, in one of the recent versions they've changed something to the rendering of diagrams. (has something to do with GDI)
Try playing with the option that controls that:
Tools/Options/Diagram/Appearance

Its just a hunch, but worth a try.

Try disabling any add-ins that might be installed in your system (something may be preventing new elements creation)
