Diagram occasionally "runs away" with scroll wheel
« on: November 04, 2010, 10:16:39 pm »
I am using a mouse with a scroll wheel. This is very convenient when one has to deal with large diagrams and normally this also works ok, but every now and then (well, actually every few minutes...) EA is apparently suddenly "flooded" by scroll wheel events and then it suddenly doesn't accept any other input any more but starts scrolling away in small steps for like 20 seconds. This is extremely annoying because it completely interrupts the work flow, moves the location one was working on completely out of sight and one then first has to scroll back and locate the previous position again. So, in total this "hickup" easily interrupts work for almost a minute.

This often happens when one just scrolled down a few "notches" of the mouse wheel, so it can't really be, that mouse sent that many events. I rather believe, that EA doesn't properly "consume" that event. It's also so, that once such a "run away" started it always keeps scrolling until the scrollbar hits a border, i.e. it's not just consuming the event multiple times and then stops, but rather it seems to continue until some other terminating condition stops that scrolling.

Could you please have a look why and how this happens and try to fix this?

Regards,
Michael

Does it happen on different hardware? software?
Have you tried setting the Options Model Loading Strategy to "pre load entire model"?
Has the mouse wheel been depressed to select scroll mode?
I have never observed this behaviour, and would suspect that if EA is "flooded with scroll events" then the underlying system might be at fault?

Orthogonality rules
Position and Team disestablished, thanks austerity.
Now itinerant.

Same here, I'm working with EA for several years now, on different OS's and systems and I've never had this problem.
Maybe you need to buy a new mouse?

@1: can't tell (EA is only installed on this machine). @2: no

No - but will try.

Well, I can't tell, whether it's really "flooded" or not. It at least feels like it, i.e. one intends to scroll down maybe half an inch and then the diagram suddenly starts scrolling away on its own for several seconds and ends up far beyond where one intended to go. And it's definitely the only application that shows that behavior.

I'm a heavy mouse scroll wheel user too, and I've never seen it.

So as much as I'd like to get it fixed for you, it appears that it isn't a simple matter to reproduce your problem.
