Installing other languages does not work
« on: May 18, 2011, 10:33:33 pm »
I installed EA9.

=> "in Tools | Spelling Tools | Spelling Options" there is no option to select another language in "Main Dictionary Language"
I installed the EADict.zip but this does not help.

This might be a silly question, but did you unzip the EADict.zip file into the Enterprise Architect install directory - C:\Program Files\Sparx Systems\EA?

If you did and the other languages are not available, submit a bug report to Sparx Support, using the link at the bottom of the page.

Hi Roy,

Yes, I unzipped them.

There are 2 issues:
1. The menu item to select a language is not there
2. I assume you can also change the "standard language", but the drop down box is empty.

Do you have the same issue, ot is it just me ( and me collegue )?

No, in Release 9.0 there is no menu option to change the spell-checker language. That function is now provided through the Main Dictionary Language field on the Spelling Options dialog.

Without downloading the EADict.zip file, the Main Dictionary Language drop-down list gives you three English options (US, Canadian and British). If you do download the file, the drop down offers several more non-English options.

I know that Support have asked you to let them know what is in C:\Program Files (x86)\Sparx Systems\EA; perhaps you could also tell them whether you have the three English options in the Main Dictionary Language drop-down list? You seem to suggest that they are not available either, in your second post.

Hi Roy,

The 3 languages were ( and still are ) not available. The drop down box is empty.
I'll tell this also to Sparx support.

I also found that when I start EA "As Administrator" - which is another user, I (he) had to provide the license key (again) and then I (he) did see ALL the languages in the "Main Dictionary language" box.

This is not good, an application should behanve exactly the same when it is run as "normal" user and if run as "Administrator" !

And that reveals the problem!  In the Using the Spell Checker topic in the Help, there is a note that reads:

In the Corporate, Business and Software Engineering, Systems Engineering and Ultimate editions of Enterprise Architect, if security is enabled you must have Spell Check permission to spell check a package and set the spell check language

So, any users or user groups who are to set the spelling language must be granted this permission in User Security. If they don't have it, they can't see the language choices or change the language. The Administrator user automatically has all user access permissions.

The note is hidden a bit deep, so I have copied it to a few more of the Spell Checking topics. Sorry that it wasn't more obvious.

Well, it seems that the problem had nothing to do with Security Access, and Support have advised Werner on the work around (cleaning up the registry keys).

However, the Help might still be misleading on the role of Security in Spell Checking. In fact, IF you have Security enabled AND you don't have the Spell Check permission, you cannot perform ANY spell check operations or configuration. All spell checking options are disabled.

If Security is not enabled, or it is enabled and you have Spell Check permission, you can check away to your hearts content and even, if you have downloaded the languages file, change the language to something truely romantic like Spanish or French! C'est magnifique, la!

I will update the note in the Spell Check topics.
